Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari have kicked off their 2016 Formula 1 preparations a little earlier than its rivals after getting some mileage in the 2014 car at Fiorano.

The four-time world champion completed a number of laps at Ferrari's private test track in Italy, Vettel - who joined the Scuderia in 2015 - getting behind the wheel of the 2014 specification F14T for the first time.

Though F1 testing is strictly regulated in F1, the FIA can consent to testing 'previous cars' from 2012, 2013 and 2014 so long as they feature no modification.

As part of the Sporting Regulations, a team must not be considered to have gained an advantage on its current preparations at any point, though tests concessions are given for promotional work and events, such as Max Verstappen's Red Bull ski slope demonstration last week.

Vettel is set to be back behind the wheel next week at Paul Ricard as Ferrari's designated driver for the two-day Pirelli wet weather tyre test. Only Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull will be present - using 2015 specification cars -, with Stoffel Vandoorne, Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo charged with driving duties.
