British CART star Dario Franchitti was taken to hospital yesterday after crashing in the championship's first official test session at Homestead.
The Scot was lying comfortably inside the top ten when the incident occurred, but hit the Turn Three wall almost head-on with just fifteen minutes of the day remaining, having just fitted new tyres to his Team Kool Green Reynard-Honda.
He was apparently awake and alert by the time rescue crews reached him, but was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital with displaced fractures of both his pelvis and left hip, and a number of minor brain contusions.
According to CART director of medical affairs Steve Olvey, Franchitti would not require surgery for any of his injuries, but would need to stay in hospital for at least the rest of the week. A statement on his condition is due today [Thursday].
