"Piquet Jr, the son of three-times F1 world champion Nelson Piquet, was extended this opportunity in recognition of his achievements in British F3 last year, in which he became the youngest-ever winner of the series," explained a statement from the team, "This opportunity enables Nelsinho to continue the long-standing association between the Piquet name and Honda, as his father won seven of his 23 victories with a Honda-powered team."
This though will not be Piquet Jr's first F1 test, however, the Brazilian having previously been given opportunities by the BMW-Williams F1 team in December 2003 and February last year.
