The Ferrari Formula 1 mechanic who suffered a broken leg after being hit by Kimi Raikkonen at last year’s Bahrain Grand Prix has returned to the team for the 2019 season.
Francesco Cigarini broke his shinbone and fibula when Raikkonen ran over his left leg during a pit stop after the Finn was mistakenly given the green light to leave the pit box.
Raikkonen pulled away and accidentally collided with Cigarini, who received medical attention in the pitlane before being transferred to Bahrain’s BDF Hospital where he underwent successful surgery.
Ferrari received €50,000 for the unsafe release, which the Italian squad later explained to be the result of a combination of three errors, sparked by the accidental press of a button on a wheel gun.
Following a swift recovery from his injury, Cigarini linked back up with his colleagues in Maranello towards the end of last year and has confirmed on social media that he will once again be a part of the team’s pit crew for the new campaign.
“First day in the box of the 2019, first day after the incident,” the Italian wrote on Instagram.
“I thought about this moment as one of a “fixed point” when I was in trouble...and I am happy to achieve it after achieved other important point during this “experience” and looking forward to achieve the other fixed point.
“Gratitude is the feeling. Thanks.”
It is understood Cigarini will be part of four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel’s pit crew in 2019.
