This is what the 2020 Formula 1 calendar looks like now…

A mere 12 events remain scheduled on the 2020 Formula 1 World Championship in the wake of news that the French Grand Prix has become the third event of the year to be cancelled altogether.

Ever since the Chinese Grand Prix was first postponed way back in February, a steady stream of announcements confirming the postponement of most first-half season rounds and a handful of entire cancellations has trickled out with no formal declaration of when things will begin again.

However, despite the blow of losing the Paul Ricard race this year entirely – after Australia and Monaco – F1’s Chase Carey seems determined to paint a more positive picture by revealing plans to get the season underway in July.

A measure of the disruption to this year’s calendar, the Austrian Grand Prix was supposed to be the 11th round of the season but now looks possible to become the de facto season opener.

F1 seems convinced it can still hold 15-18 races this season, which would reflect the three that have been cancelled, plus give or take a couple more to fall by the wayside. For instance, looking at the events left on the schedule it’d be hard to see how street venues in Singapore and Vietnam could take place safely without spectators due to their inner-city location.

Alternatively, double-headers at single venues could also be used to make up the numbers.

For now, seven events – Bahrain, Vietnam, China, Netherlands, Spain, Azerbaijan and Canada – are still tentatively included on the calendar but with no dates attached to them.

Here is how the 2020 F1 calendar is shaping up as of April 27 2020...
