Vettel expected more from Ferrari F1 in wet conditions
Sebastian Vettel was left disappointed by Ferrari’s wet weather pace in a dramatic qualifying for the Styrian Grand Prix.
Vettel put his Ferrari tenth on the grid, while team-mate Charles Leclerc could only manage 11th.
Typically, the wet conditions act as an equaliser with teams struggling for straight-line speed - like Ferrari, or Red Bull in its years with Renault - benefitting as the wet requires a good level of downforce and a strong chassis.
The wet didn't aid Ferrari's chances with Vettel ending qualifying 2.4s off pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton and Leclerc failing to make it into Q3.
"Honestly, yes,’’ Vettel said when asked if he expected to perform better in the wet conditions. "It was a difficult session for us. We struggled to get the tyres to work and now we have to have a good look to see why. I had lots of aquaplaning in particular at the end of Q2 and in Q3 as well.
"So not ideal. We need to make sure we learn the maximum we can from this session and take it into the next wet session. Tomorrow should be dry which is a bit different. We fight and try everything we can tomorrow.''
Leclerc was unable to progress into Q3 as the rain intensity increased in the dying minutes.
"Unfortunately we had the rain when we went on the second set,'' Leclerc added. "Anyway the main problem today was that we were just not quick enough.
"There was just not much we could do. We were 1.8 off. However we look at it, we are just too slow at the moment. We just need to work.''
