Perez fully prepared for “emotional” final Racing Point F1 outing in Abu Dhabi
Sergio Perez feels he’s fully equipped to make his way from the back of the Formula 1 grid for the second week running in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Perez will start from the back of the grid after taking a fresh power unit for this weekend’s season finale in Abu Dhabi.
With Racing Point embroiled in a close fight with McLaren for third in the constructors’ championship, Perez will need to make significant progress in the race if it is to maintain its points advantage.
With it being clear Perez would be forced to start from the back of the grid, he’s confident his car has been set-up perfectly for race conditions.
“We’ve put everything together for the race,” Perez said. “We’ve focused on every single bit, so we’ll see what we are able to do. But a lot of things can happen.
“We have a lot of things to lose tomorrow. It still requires a very good race from our side. We have to make sure we get into the points – well into them because the battle in the championship is very, very tight so we have to make sure that we have a strong race tomorrow and make as much progress as we possibly can.”
Sunday’s race will be Perez’s final outing in Racing Point colours having spent seven seasons with the Silverstone-based squad.
The Mexican expects it to be an emotional final race in Abu Dhabi.
“I’m just starting to realise things are coming to an end,” Perez added. “We just did our final qualifying in our history, so tomorrow will be a bit emotional I guess.
“Hopefully tomorrow we can recover as much as possible. We have to do something different. We have to use our car pace tomorrow, try to get as much free air as possible and see where we end up. I think here will be a bit different [to the Sakhir Grand Prix] – but you never know.”
