Through the lense: Kym Illman’s top 10 F1 photos

Crash.net talks to Australian Formula 1 photographer Kym Illman on his top 10 favourite photos (and a few bonus ones!) that he has taken from his time in the sport.

Illman is Australia’s only permanently accredited F1 photographer, having turned his attentions to the sport’s fast and furious world back in 2017.

His unique take on covering the sport photographically has resulted in him becoming the number one F1 photographer on Instagram in the space of just 16 months.

Kym has kindly walked Crash through the story of his favourite F1 photos, including the likes of Daniel Ricciardo, Charles Leclerc, Romain Grosjean and Nico Hulkenberg to name but a few.

In the video, which you can watch below, Kym opens up on his unique photography style which places focuses on capturing the people behind the helmet and bridging the accessibility gap to fans, providing them a glance into the driver’s personalities.

Before falling in love with F1, Illman went to Africa and spent 26 weeks there over two and a half years photographing for a wildlife book that was launched in 2015 and was extremely popular.

"I went to Abu Dhabi in 2016 as a guest of Red Bull – I paid the money, got down into the pits and did the whole experience, and it was quite lovely standing there and listening to Daniel Ricciardo talk to his engineer, and it was all very calm in the paddock and the garage at that stage and I thought “this is quite lovely, I wouldn’t mind photographing this stuff!" Ilmman said.
