Championship Auto Racing Teams has announced an initial restructuring of the open-wheel sanctioning body's racing division, resulting in the elimination of the positions of president of racing Hal Whiteford and vice-president of logistics Dennis Swan.

The announcement was made last night by CART president and chief executive officer Joseph F. Heitzler.

"The re-evaluation process for racing operations is ongoing, and I look forward to working with the racing operations team over the next few weeks as we further establish our direction," said Heitzler.

"Over the past three months, we have conducted comprehensive internal evaluation and done extensive research throughout the CART community as we gathered feedback and data to help us formulate our strategic initiatives. It became clear as we did our evaluation that we must establish a new direction for our racing division, one that better meets the needs of all of our constituents.

"All of us at CART want to thank Hal and Dennis for their commitment and dedication during their tenure at CART and wish them well in their future endeavours."

During the re-evaluation process, Tim Mayer, on an interim basis, will co-ordinate racing operations' day-to-day activities and report directly to Heitzler. In addition, Kirk Russell now reports to Heitzler as well. The entire racing operations team will be involved in the re-evaluation process.
