Brazilian Airton Dare is in a stable condition in a Dallas hospital after breaking his right leg and arm in a practice accident on Thursday at the Texas Motor Speedway. Team Owner AJ Foyt has tabbed former Team Menard driver Jaques Lazier as a replacement.
Dare crashed his #5 AJ Foyt Racing Dallara-Toyota just ten minutes after the start of practice for Saturday night's Bombardier 500, a session already delayed extensively by rain. Track officials at the ultra-fast 1.5-mile tri-shaped oval spent several minutes removing the 25 year-old former IRL Rookie of the Year before transporting him to the nearby Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.
According to Dr Henry Bock, the Indy Racing League's chief medical director, Dare sustained a broken right femur and right humerus in the crash and was scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday evening.
With Dare fully conscious in hospital, Foyt quickly moved to grab Jaques Lazier's services for the remainder of the weekend, even though the spare #5 machine (a Dallara not a G Force) wasn't ready for qualifying. Fired from his position at Team Menard less than two weeks ago, Lazier was attending the event as a spectator.
"I'm speechless," said the 32 year-old. "I came to watch this weekend, and I hate to get a ride like this. My thoughts are with Airton (Dare), and I'm glad he's going to be OK. To be driving for a legend like A.J. (Foyt) is beyond words. I'm just thrilled."
