New Menards Infiniti Pro Series champion Wade Cunningham has been penalised and fined for unsportsmanlike behaviour during the season finale at California Speedway on the weekend, but still retains the title.
The Kiwi was slapped with a 15-point penalty and fined him an undisclosed amount for reckless and overly-aggressive driving during the California 100, having touched wheels with second-place finisher Jeff Simmons on the last lap of the race. No doubt eager to defend his position with a first series win and the title in his grasp, Cunningham was punished for violating rule 1.2 (B) of the MIPS rule book.
Cunningham may contest the penalty, but any appeal may result in an increase, decrease or no change to the penalty. As things stand, he retains a 30-point advantage over Simmons in the overall standings.
