Everts injured in Supermotard race.

2002 MX500 World Champion Stefan Everts crashed in the first heat of the Masters of Supermotard race held yesterday in Belgium - sustaining an ankle injury.

The YZ mounted Motocross star went down in the first corner from the start after making contact with another rider. Everts sustained an injury to his left ankle: Medics diagnosed one of his outer ligaments to be ripped off taking a piece of ankle bone with it.

A need for surgery is not expected, but the six-times world champ's left leg is in plaster and he will be forced to take a break from riding for a period of six weeks in order to completely heal the injury.

Everts will move to the new 'GP' World Championship class on a 450cc four stroke in 2003.
