For the first time in its 55 year history, a new trophy will record the names of all future MotoGP world champions, starting with 2003 title holder Valentino Rossi.

Created by top international sculptor Lorenzo Quinn, son of Hollywood actor Anthony Quinn, the trophy brings MotoGP in line with other illustrious sporting events which remember their champions in such a fashion.

The sculpture (picture) weighs in at 30kg and measures 70cm in height. It is described as: "A detailed bronze carving (which) depicts the distinguished and unique history of the MotoGP world championship and its lasting global appeal, whilst the titanium and carbon-fibre base represents the state-of-the-art technology which guarantees its long and prosperous future."

The trophy has already been inscribed with the name of 2003 champion Rossi and will be officially unveiled and presented to the Italian next weekend during the official MotoGP IRTA test at the Circuit de Catalunya, Spain.

Rossi and every subsequent MotoGP world champion will be presented with a replica version of the trophy to keep.
