Reigning double AMA Superbike champion Ben Spies is making his MotoGP debut this weekend, in place of the injured Loris Capirossi, while Nicky Hayden is riding with Honda's pneumatic-valve engine for the first time at a grand prix.

Jorge Lorenzo has been ruled out of this weekend's race following a heavy Friday practice fall.

This morning's first session was held on a drying track, but the weather took a turn for the worse this afternoon - with rain pouring down throughout the second hour.
Both Marco Melandri and Ducati Marlboro team-mate Casey Stoner chose to pit for their wet weather bikes, after suffering mechanical problems with their number one machines.

Fiat Yamaha, Repsol Honda and Honda Gresini, plus the Yamaha and Kawasaki test teams, were present in Malaysia this week - although, as planned, Hayden and Repsol Honda finished their Sepang test programme on Wednesday.
The three-day test marks the debut of the 2008 Yamaha YZR-M1 and the return of world champion Casey Stoner from a shoulder injury sustained at Jerez last November. Of the provisional 2008 grid, only Team Roberts are not attending the test.
Valentino Rossi retired with technical problems with 10 laps to go.
Rossi was injured early in the session while Casey Stoner has won the 2007 BMW Best Qualifier Award.
