A rookie hadn’t won the 500cc/MotoGP title since Kenny Roberts in 1978, but Marquez wrote his name into history as the youngest ever premier-class champion after a final round showdown with Jorge Lorenzo.

2014 saw a devastating title defence in the form of 13 victories, including the opening ten races in a row, but the rug was pulled from under him by an ill-handling Honda in 2015.

Marquez bounced back from that defeat to lift the title in both 2016 and 2017 - meaning a total of six world championships, four in the premier-class.
