Son of legend Mamola to make British 125GP bow
The legendary Mamola name will be seen competing on British shores for the first time in almost two decades in 2010, with Dakota Mamola, the 15-year-old son of multiple grand prix race-winner Randy, set to join the fray in the British 125GP Championship.
Mamola Jnr has signed up to race for KRP, an outfit that already has on its riding strength Taylor Mackenzie, another competitor with a proud motorcycling heritage, given that his father is three-time BSB Champion and erstwhile factory GP star Niall Mackenzie. It is, affirms team manager Mark Keen, an exciting partnership.
"It is fantastic news for the championship and racing as a whole that Dakota joins us this season," he enthused, speaking to the official BSB website. "He has a famous family name, but he brings with him his own talent, focus and passion. He's just a good kid."
KRP will also be supported this year by reigning 125cc World Championship runner-up Bradley Smith, who is bidding to go one better still in 2010 by lifting the laurels before he aims to progress his burgeoning career on to Moto2.
"Dakota Mamola joining the KRP team means a lot to me," underlined the 19-year-old. "I am nervous because we have become good friends, but more than anything I am excited because Dakota has great talent and now we're part of the Mamola history. How exciting is that?!"
Famous crowd-pleaser Mamola Snr triumphed in 13 races in the premier class between 1979 and 1992, finishing second in the world championship on four occasions before hanging up his helmet and turning to TV commentary work with Eurosport.
