Motostar: Catherine Green savours landmark podium
Catherine Green is celebrating after becoming the first female racer to turn in a podium finish at British Championship level after being classified third in the Knockhill round of the Monster Energy Motostar Championship.
The 39-year-old has been a regular in the BSB paddock since making her 125GP debut in 2006 and has enjoyed a linear progression into the upper half of the field since joining RS Racing for the 2012 season.
Unfortunate to miss out on an elusive podium finish at Oulton Park after suffering with mechanical gremlins, Green was finally rewarded with silverware at Knockhill when she was classified in third position, behind Kyle Ryde and Tarran Mackenzie.
Though pending post-race investigations meant Green didn't get the chance to literally stand on the podium, the result does nonetheless mark the first time a female rider has claimed a top three finish at this level.
"After missing out on a potential second place finish at Oulton Park earlier this year when the crank failed I was absolutely delighted to finally get my hands on some silverware," she mused. "Admittedly it wasn't in the simplest of circumstances though.
"Shortly before the race was red flagged, the few laps under the safety car saw a couple of riders continue to overtake as the rest of us had rolled off to hold our positions. It wasn't until after the podium ceremony that a post-race investigation confirmed my final third placing so technically I didn't get to stand on the podium but I'm more determined than ever to step up there sometime soon!"
Jenny Tinmouth, who made history by becoming the first woman to race in the British Superbike Championship last season, has claimed podiums in the British Supersport Cup category, but not in an overall race.
