Reigning champion Marco Wittmann was the last of the top-four runners to lap within 0.1s of Green's 1 minute 21.973s lap time, while Mike Rockenfeller completed the top-five ahead of his Audi team mate Rene Rast in sixth, just a further 0.041s adrift of Wittmann's Team RMG BMW M4.
With the majority of the championship contenders qualifying in the top-six order, Mercedes driver Lucas Auer runs the risk of losing further ground in the title battle at his home event after only managing the twelfth fastest time in qualifying.
Indeed, by qualifying in third position, Ekstrom extended his championship lead of Auer by a single point ahead of the first race.
Instead, it's Robert Wickens who carries the hopes of Mercedes into the first race after the Canadian qualified in seventh ahead of BMW trio, Maxime Martin, Timo Glock and Augusto Farfus, who all completed the top-ten order.
