Wolff reveals summer talks with Verstappen

Toto Wolff has revealed he held talks with Max Verstappen’s camp over the summer break about the possibility of him joining Mercedes for F1 2025.

"I thought all through the year that there was a window or that there was a possibility. It wasn't zero," Wolff told Dutch media at Zandvoort.

"It's pretty bumpy ground there still, and not only for performance reasons, but also because of interpersonal issues that we're all aware.

"By the way, I got on with Jos for all my life. But maybe because we're a bit similar. And that's why I thought the door was never completely closed.

"What were the odds of that happening? Maybe they were 10 to one. Nine to one. Still, I didn't want to give up, but then we together came to the conclusion over the summer that we shouldn't be waiting for something to happen before committing for 2025, but let's just continue our job, Max at Red Bull and here at Mercedes taking our own driver decisions.

"And that was a kind of a joint thought.”

What happened in FP3?

Pierre Gasly set the fastest time in final F1 practice for the Dutch Grand Prix following a 40-minute delay to the session following Logan Sargeant’s crash.

The majority of the session was under red flag conditions after Sargeant crashed heavily on the exit of Turn 4.

Sargeant put a wheel on the wet grass, causing him to spin and clatter the barriers violently.

His Williams was engulfed in flames as a result, putting his participation in qualifying in doubt due to the amount of work needed.

The barrier needed repairing hence the near 40-minute delay to the session.

Full FP3 results

Here's how things ended up in final practice.

That's it for FP3

The chequered flag is out and that is FP3 wrapped up.

A truncated session following Sargeant's huge shunt and no properly representative times to take into consideration.

For what it's worth, Gasly set the fastest time with a 1m20.311s in his Alpine on intermediates.

Session resumes

FP3 has resumed for what will be a final three minutes of running at Zandvoort.

Presumably, this is mainly to allow for the drivers to get some practice starts in.

Session set to resume

News from race control: We are set to get going again at 11:25 BST. If so, there will just be five minutes of running left in FP3.

Williams expect chassis change

Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Williams team principal James Vowles confirmed the team have a "limited amount" of spare parts.

He also said Sargeant, who was running Williams' new upgrade on his car, will likely need a chassis change.

"There's a limited amount, so if something happens to the other car, you need to make sure in parc ferme that you have spares. That's what I want to understand now. Can you service both cars?" he said.

"The first step of it is we will go through in detail what's been damaged. It looks pretty serious and that could result in a chassis change."

Set for a lengthy delay

Sargeant's heavily damaged Williams has been recovered and is now back in the pit lane.

Work is still ongoing to clean up the track and carry out repairs to the barriers, which took a big whack in that collision.

Could be a while before we get going again as the clock continues to tick down under the red flag.

Red flag!

Now we do have a red flag!

It's caused by Sargeant, who has had a big crash down at Turn 4.

Sargeant confirms he is ok but his car is definitely not. It has suffered significant damage and has even caught fire!

The American jumps out and is safe as marshals work quickly to extinguish the flames.

Hulkenberg crashes again

For the second time in two days, Hulkenberg has crashed!

This time he has hit the wall down at Turn 11 and broken his front wing in the process.

Unlike yesterday, however, Hulkenberg has managed to get back to the pit lane under his own steam and there is no need for a red flag.

The German seems to still be plagued by the braking issues he suffered on Friday.

First time on the board

Piastri puts the first time on the board with a 1m24.176s in his McLaren.

Four drivers on track

Both Haas and Sauber drivers have ventured out on the full wet tyres for some early exploratory laps around the wet Zandvoort track.

Can Verstappen and Red Bull hit back?

McLaren and Mercedes took turns topping Friday's two practice sessions at Zandvoort, with George Russell ending the day fastest by just 0.061s ahead of Oscar Piastri and teammate Lewis Hamilton in third.

Max Verstappen was only fifth fastest, 0.284s off the pace. The world championship leader, without a win since June's Spanish Grand Prix, admitted Red Bull were "a bit too slow" on both the short and long runs and was left searching for answers.

Verstappen is unbeaten at Zandvoort since it returned to the F1 calendar in 2021 but the Dutchman appears to be facing an uphill battle as he looks to secure his fourth home win in a row.

Have they managed to turn things around overnight? And how will the wet weather impact the competitive order today?

It's qualifying day at Zandvoort!

Good morning!

We have a final hour of practice coming up at 1030 UK time before qualifying gets underway this afternoon at 2pm.

Looks like we are set for some fairly miserable weather, with persistent rain falling at Zandvoort this morning.

The F1 Academy qualifying session just took place in the wet conditions.
