Carlos Sainz improves to P2 but is nearly two seconds down on Kevin Magnussen.
Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso sits third, with Lewis Hamilton posting a succession of personal best laps in fourth.
Kevin Magnussen lights up the timing screens with a hat trick of purple sectors to put his Haas fastest on a 1m33.710s.
Lewis Hamilton goes second-fastest with his first-timed lap of the day. He's 0.9s adrift of Carlos Sainz.
Esteban Ocon, Sergio Perez and Yuki Tsunoda are the other drivers to get on the board so far.
