The film chronically the life of the late Ayrton Senna has secured a major award at the Sundance Film Festival in the United States.

Asif Kapadia, the director of 'Senna' secured the World Cinema Audience Award for Documentary Film during the awards on Saturday evening ahead of its worldwide release later in the year.

"I just got back from Salt Lake City, for a screening - I should have dressed in something nicer," Kapadia said. "This Festival's restored my faith in festivals. It's all about the films, the filmmakers and audiences, and every screening is sold out."

The documentary film, written by Manish Pandey, focuses on Senna's rise from a rookie entering F1 to a triple world champion before his death in an accident at Imola during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
