Schumacher was forced to watch his McLaren rivals clocking up both vital track-time and the quickest laps of the opening session after his F399 chassis was stranded in the pit-lane exit without first gear. As the exit road technically counts as part of the race-track, Schumacher was prevented from either retrieving his car or taking the spare until after the end of the opening hour.
