The German, who has achieved two podium finishes in as many races with his latest team, claimed that the two years he spent at Grove helped him learn about the sport and experience the downside of life in the top rank. Now, in a less formal team, he is flourishing, and scoring the points finishes guaranteed to build confidence.

"I have to say that I would not have wanted to miss these two years with Williams because, there, I found myself," Frentzen admitted, "I didn't use the potential [of the team] when I was driving for them, but I learned a lot about Formula One techniques and about the people in the sport."

Frentzen also had some encouraging words for Jordan team-mate - and fellow Williams refugee - Damon Hill: "When things go wrong for me, " he said, "I think Damon will be up there as well to make the points. He is very good at striking back and he will be at the front in Imola."
