The vacant twelfth Formula One entry is unlikely to be filled before 2001, according to the FIA's Bernie Ecclestone.


Ecclestone, who was rumoured to be putting a team together to fill the slot, has admitted that there is little chance of anyone being ready to enter the category before next season, even though there are several potential candidates Toyota are known to be in the early stages of assembling an F1 outfit, while F3000 teams European Racing and Kid Jensen Racing have also hinted that they may look to graduate in the near future.

Ecclestone is convinced that the vacancy will be filled by a major manufacturer, as Formula One now offers the amount of publicity many crave. The former Brabham boss claimed that F1 provides 'the cheapest for of advertising and public relations any company has got', before admitting that his own plans had foundered.


"We didn't want to simply upgrade a Formula 3000 team and then find that it couldn't get the job done," he said.
