Although no formal findings have been released, McLaren managing director Martin Whitmarsh revealed that Bridgestone had found no cuts in the remains of the tyre involved in David Coulthard's similar incident on Saturday, and that the remains of Hakkinen's tyre were still under investigation. It had been suspected that McLaren's rear wing - run with very few elements at the high-speed German circuit - could have chafed at the tyres, causing them to deflate, but Whitmarsh claimed that this theory had been ruled out.


"It has been confirmed by a Bridgestone engineer that they do not believe a rear wing failure caused the subsequent tyre problem on Hakkinen's car," he said, "but we have reached no conclusion, and it would be unwise to speculate further."
