The Brazilian, who is contesting his rookie F1 campaign, was thought to have been under pressure in recent weeks, following speculation that team boss Craig Pollock was looking to replace him for 2000. A statement issued at the European Grand Prix, however, has since confirmed his position with the team.

"He has done a great job for us this year, in sometimes difficult circumstances," Pollock said, "I am sure he has learned a lot in the process and will undoubtedly be able to build on that experience. From our point of view, the fact that we are retaining our driver line-up next season helps to provide the team with useful continuity and stability."

Zonta missed three races early in the season, after injuring his foot in the Brazilian GP at Interlagos. Since returning, he has struggled to match the pace of team leader Jacques Villeneuve, but is determined to help the team to better things next year.

"It has not been an easy year," he said, "but, then, I never expected that Formula One would be. I have learned a lot this year, and I've been impressed with the hard work and dedication shown by everyone at Brackley. It is that sort of commitment that convinces me BAR will become a winning team, and that I want to be part of it."
