Tyres Not Groovy, Says Schumi.

Michael Schumacher has launched another attack on the current batch of grooved Formula One tyres, claiming that they make the cars less, rather than more, safe.

The German, who broke his right leg in a crash at the British Grand Prix last season, believes that the modern breed of F1 car is less stable than previous incarnations. Whilst he admits that his perception may simply be function of age and experience, the double world champion hinted that he would welcome a move back to full slick tyres in the near future.

Whilst he admits that his perception may simply be function of age and experience, the double world champion hinted that he would welcome a move back to full slick tyres in the near future.

"Today's cars are not as stable as they used to be, because they lack grip due to the grooved tyres," he said, "Personally, I do not fully agree with the arguments of improving safety by reducing speeds by switching to grooved tyres and, basically, I would like to see more grip. I don't see why we cannot drive four or five seconds a lap quicker than we do now.

"I believe [all the drivers today] have our own strengths and weaknesses. Maybe there's a point where you reach a certain age, and you notice that adapting to a new situation is too difficult, but I don't see that it would be hard, physically, returning to slicks."
