Far from bowing out at the end of the season, Japanese engine builder Mugen has suggested that it may still be in Formula One next year.

Speaking at the FIA press conference before its home grand prix, the company's Hirotoshi Honda pointed out that it was only media speculation that had condemned Mugen to the annals of F1 history already.

"I understand already, from the reports by the press in various magazines and newspapers, that we will finish our F1 activity at the end of this year," smiled Honda, "But the point is - and this is very important for us - that we have never commented [about it] in public yet, because we were in negotiations with Honda and Jordan. We are awaiting for a reply from Honda, and we will make an announcement at the next race. You will see then."

The company had been linked with Prost for 2001, following the Honda factory's decision to link up with current Mugen customer Jordan next year. Although Prost has now inked a deal with Ferrari for the next two seasons, there remain openings for Mugen, although it is expected that the company could join forces with its one-time parent for the 2001 assault.

"I am not saying anything today because there will be a more detailed announcement in Malaysia," was Honda-san's cryptic response to questions.
