The Italian has been complaining of knee pains ever since the end of the race season, but only decided to enter hospital for the operation after an examination last week showed that he had a tibial micro fracture.

The operation which was carried out earlier today [Monday] has been deemed a success by doctors, although it will mean that Fisi is out of action until some time in the New Year. The Benetton driver was due to have attended this week's Michelin test at Estoril, but will not be replaced by reserve driver Mark Webber. The Italian joins Michael Schumacher on the injured list, but both are expected to be back in action well before the start of next season.

Jenson Button is already in Portugal with the Benetton team.
