2001 Grand Prix Party - Who got the awards?

The 2001 Grand Prix Party at the Royal Albert Hall in London last night handed out the very first 'Bernies'.

Billed as Formula One's Oscars the first 'Bernie' went to Jenson Button for being the 2000 Rookie of the year. The young Brit was not there in person to pick up the award as new team boss Flavio Briatore wouldn't give the Englishman time off.

His award was picked up by fellow Brits Darren Manning and Anthony Davidson both test drivers for the British American Racing team.

Murray Walker received the second 'Bernie' of the night for being a World Champion commentator. Walker who plans to retire from F1 broadcasting at the end of the year was presented with the award by 1992 World Champion Nigel Mansell.

The voice of F1 said: "I don't want to stop but when you've got to go you've got to go." Walker also paid a warm tribute to Nigel Mansell when he added: "This man has given me more fun and excitement than all the rest put together. This man is a superstar."

It was no surprise that Michael Schumacher got the third F1 'Oscar' for being the best driver of 2000. Like Button the German was unable to be there in person as he was busy testing and Jody Scheckter collected it on his behalf.

Scheckter the last man to have won the title for the Italian team before Schumacher won it in 2000 said: "He did a great job. Anyone that wins that many races and takes that many poles deserves it."

The final 'Bernie' went to Sid Watkins - FIA Medical Delegate - for his role in helping make Grand Prix racing a safer place. He said: "I'm overcome. I have so many friends in F1 and in the world of motor racing. I would like to express my appreciation for all those who have supported me over the years. I have always wanted to take Bernie home and now I have my chance."
