F1 touches down in Australia.

The first of the seven jumbo jets bringing the Formula One show to Melbourne for the 2001 Qantas Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park on March 1-4 has arrived.

The jumbo touched down at Avalon Airport, south-west of Melbourne, at 9.40 on Tuesday night. Another two jumbos are due early Wednesday, three on Sunday and the last
early Monday.

The first three planes are loaded mainly with television equipment, while the three on Sunday will carry the cars of the 22 drivers plus at least one spare car for each of the 11 teams.

The arrival of French tyre maker Michelin in Formula One to challenge Japan's Bridgestone will double the number of tyres brought to Melbourne, requiring the seventh jumbo this year.

Already it is expected that an eighth jumbo will be needed next year when Toyota becomes the 12th team in F1.
