FIA President Max Mosley has been elected Chairman of the Supervisory Board of ERTICO, the public private partnership which co-ordinates the development of intelligent transport systems in Europe.
Backed by the European Commission, ERTICO brings together new technology providers, vehicle manufacturers, national and local authorities and consumer representatives in one non-profit organisation.
On his appointment Mosley said: "Advanced intelligent vehicle systems can significantly improve car safety, environmental performance and reduce congestion. ERTICO's unique partnership approach is essential if we are to reap the full benefits of these new technologies but collaboration must be set in the context of clear and specific targets and timescales for action."
He added: "During my tenure as Chairman it will be my priority to encourage the rapid delivery of new road safety and environmental technologies for the benefit of all Europe's road users and motoring consumers."
The FIA's policy priorities for intelligent transport systems include encouraging greater public authority investment in intelligent transport technologies and infrastructure; developing early agreement on motor industry standards for a common multi-media interface; encouraging early introduction of advanced driver assistance systems with common car-to-car and infrastructure-to-car communication standards; and to developing an active safety test protocol as part of the Euro NCAP.
