Mugello test - day three: 23 August.

The third day of testing at Mugello saw Michael Schumacher taking the fastest time of 1m24.893s for Ferrari over 87 laps.

The German driver took to the track early, with a job list of tyre testing and set-up work. His session ended early however, when the four time World Champion's car went off the track due to a mechanical failure. The car was shipped back to Maranello to undergo a more accurate study of the incident, causing tomorrow's testing for Ferrari to be cancelled.

The morning session saw both Takuma Sato and Jacques Villeneuve testing for the BAR team, Olivier Panis joining Villeneuve for the afternoon session. Over the past two days the focus has been on both set-up and development work. Villeneuve's two-day test has concentrated on preparatory work for the
forthcoming Belgian Grand Prix, with emphasis on both tyres and dampers as well as the overall balance of the car. The trio of Villeneuve, Sato and Panis came in sixth, seventh and fourth respectively.

A third and final day tomorrow will see Takuma back in the car, this time alongside Olivier, as Jacques heads home.

Jordan-Honda's Jarno Trulli was second quickest in what was to be one of his last tests for the team. Team-mate Jean Alesi produced a time just 0.2s slower than Trulli showing his ability to adjust to the new team.

Raikkonen in the Sauber was sandwiched between the BAR's of Panis and 1997 World Champion Villeneuve, giving him an overall position of fifth. The European-Minardi of Yoong was the slowest car of all, coming over six seconds behind the front-runner Schumacher.
