The BMW.Williams team has moved smartly to head off rivals attempting to poach one half of the team responsible for the successful FW23, by extending its deal with chief designer Gavin Fisher.

However, co-creator Geoff Willis has confirmed that he will be leaving the Grove outfit.

Williams boss Frank Williams, and technical director Patrick Head, confirmed tonight [Monday] that a long-term extension to Fisher's contract had been agreed, ensuring that the British designer would stay with the operation for several more seasons.

However, co-creator Geoff Willis has confirmed that he will be leaving the Grove outfit.

Williams boss Frank Williams, and technical director Patrick Head, confirmed tonight [Monday] that a long-term extension to Fisher's contract had been agreed, ensuring that the British designer would stay with the operation for several more seasons.

They also revealed, however, that Willis, currently the team's chief aerodynamicist, is to take up a more senior appointment with British American Racing. Willis will remain with Williams until the 1 March 2002, though, effectively limiting the input he could have on BAR's new challenger, which is due to be unveiled before Christmas.

Following his departure, changes of responsibility will be made within the existing aerodynamics department.

Both Willis and Fisher had been the target for covetous rivals within the F1 fold, with BAR and Jaguar the most apparent destinations for their recently unveiled talents.
