Testing update - team by team.

All the Formula One teams have been testing at various different venues this week. Find out what each team has been up to:

Ferrari - Schumacher happy with new car:

The Ferrari F2002 has proved quick straight out of the box, proving quick enough to break the Fiorano lap record with a lap in 58.620s on its first test with Michael Schumacher at the wheel. The car was run in its basic version without the final aerodynamic specification. Schumacher completed 181 laps in four days with only minor problems. He later improved his time to 58.378s which is the fastest ever Fiorano lap time.

On Thursday the programme moved to Mugello but stopped after 36 laps due to a mechanical problem after Schumacher had managed a 1m 23.650s. "It is just better than last year's car which you can see from the lap times", said Schumacher. Schumacher continued testing at Mugello on Friday and will continue there today [Saturday]. Ferrari starts a three day test at Imola on Monday.

McLaren-Mercedes - Back at Valencia:

After David Coulthard's high speed accident at Barcelona last Friday, which badly damaged one of the MP4/17s after a rear tyre punctured at 300kph, the Scot remained at the circuit for another day's running on Saturday during which he successfully completed 400km.

This week the team moved to Valencia where Alexander Wurz and Kimi Raikkonen also continued tyre and engine development programmes in preparation for the first race of the season. Raikkonen was fastest on Thursday with a 1m 10.937s ahead of Wurz on 1m 11.914s.

Williams-BMW - Starting at Estoril:

The BMW WilliamsF1 team started a three day test at Estoril yesterday [Friday] with a single FW24 which was shared by Ralf Schumacher and Antonio Pizzonia. Last Sunday the team's Valencia test ended on a high note with Juan Pablo Montoya posting a 1m 10.997s best which was 0.6sec quicker than the fastest time recorded by the rival McLaren MP4/17 up to that point.

After no fewer than 15 days testing at Barcelona and Valencia, separated only by the weekend of February 2/3 while the cars switched locations, the team spent this week back at base preparing cars for Australia. It is expected that the final shakedown of a single car will take at Valencia from Wednesday to Friday of next week.

Sauber-Petronas - Preparing for final Mugello test:

The Sauber Petronas team is preparing two C21s for the final pre-season test at Mugello which will start today [Saturday] and last for three days with both drivers. Felipe Massa's C21, which had two crashes in Valencia testing, has now been repaired; the second shunt was quite heavy, damaging one side crash structure in the impact. Mugello will see the team concentrate on tyre testing and the final checking of aerodynamic developments.

Jordan-Honda - New car poised for launch:

The final race livery of the new Jordan-Honda EJ-12 will be unveiled at Brussels airport on Friday 22 February just prior to the team packing up its cars for departure for Melbourne. Meanwhile the team completed a three day test at Barcelona on Wednesday.

The programme started on Monday with Marcel Lasee joining Takuma Sato, Lasee driving the EJ-12 in order that Giancarlo Fisichella could spend an extra day recuperating from the bruised knee he sustained in an accident at Valencia the previous week. Foggy weather caused the first day's test to start late and Sato managed a 1m 21.59s, third fastest on the day, after a productive spell working on engine mapping and aerodynamic development. Lasee completed 60 laps for a best of 1m 22.61s after working on brakes and also tyre testing for Bridgestone. Fisichella duly joined the test on Wednesday and successfully covered 38 laps for a 1m 20.52s best although in the afternoon the engineers spent some time resolving a minor systems problem wth his car. Sato meanwhile managed a 1m 21.55s. On Thursday Sato managed a 1m 18.95s after race simulation work and general set-up evaluation. Fisichella did a 1m 20.36s, commenting: "We had a couple of problems this week but overall it's been productive, particularly the last day as it was good to do a race distance. My confidence in the car and new engine increases every day".

BAR-Honda - Preparing for Paul Ricard test:

The BAR Honda team returned this week from its comprehensive Valencia test where it put the preliminary elements of the Melbourne technical package through their paces. Olivier Panis and Jacques Villeneuve were on track with their new BAR 004 for the full five days and test drivers Anthony Davidson and Ryo Fukuda joined them over the weekend. The team's programme had been frustrated by a lack of running time over the first three days, mainly due to numerous red flags. The team was pushing hard to make up for lost time and as a result experienced some minor problems. Honda's development specification engines are being used right up to the team's departure for Australia, so the problems they encountered provided a useful opportunity for trouble-shooting.

The team is now preparing for its final pre-Melbourne test at Paul Ricard next week from February 18 with Panis running on Monday and Tuesday followed by Villeneuve on Wednesday and Thursday. The test will see another step in the evolution of the final Melbourne technical package.

Renault F1 - Upbeat test at Barcelona:

The Renault F1 team has had a very positive three day test at Barcelona from Monday to Wednesday this week which ended with Jenson Button setting fastest time on the final day. By Tuesday evening Jarno Trulli was setting the pace in the Renault R202 on 1m 17.758s after covering 77 laps while test driver Fernando Alonso carried out important software development work in one of last year's B201s, although the Spaniard never completed a flying lap. On Wednesday the test concluded with Jenson Button setting a 1m 17.677s, again the fastest lap of the day, in the R202. "It was a very positive test and Jenson made some really worthwhile progress", said Technical Director Mike Gascoyne. "This was probably the most productive programme since the beginning of testing in January. On Wednesday Jenson ran a programme similar to Jarno's the previous day and found the car both consistent and fast".

The Renault F1 team will carry out its final pre-season test from Monday 18 to Wednesday 20 February, shaking down all three R202s prior to their despatch for Melbourne.

Jaguar-Cosworth - More tests at Valencia:

A three day test for the Jaguar team saw Eddie Irvine and Pedro de la Rosa evaluating a new floor and revised rear suspension on the new R3 in preparation for the start of the season. De la Rosa tried the new package first, completing 11 laps for a best time of 1m 15.598s while Irvine managed just two further installation laps. On Wednesday de la Rosa posted a 1m 12.840s with Irvine just behind on 1m 14.330s, both men running different development programmes. On Thursday de la Rosa managed a 1m 13.215s with Irvine on 1m 14.978s, completing the final pre-season assessment of the recent aerodynamic changes to the car. Team principal Niki Lauda said: "It has been a positive step forward in terms of making revisions to the car but the three month testing ban is something that we, like many other teams, could have done without. Ideally we could have done with five or six days here at Valencia, but we have certainly made the best of our time here".

Arrows - Barcelona and Vairano:

After Heinz-Harald Frentzen had his first outing in the new Arrows-Cosworth A23 last week at Valencia, the team moved to Barcelona from Monday to Wednesday when Enrique Bernoldi ran the first two days with Frentzen taking over for the third. "This was all routine stuff and the new car made steady progress", said a team spokesperson. "We've been getting through all the homework necessary". The team has also solved the problem which caused Frentzen to twice lose the rear wing at Valencia. Frentzen managed a 1m 18.601s second fastest at Barcelona on Wednesday by which time Bernoldi had moved onto Vairano in Italy to start straight-line tests with the second A23 to be completed. Both - Frentzen and Bernoldi - will be at Silverstone next Monday to Wednesday shaking down all three A23s in preparation for the first race.

Minardi-Asiatech - Satisfied with test:

The KL Minardi team has been running with two new PS02s at both Valencia and Barcelona, working on reliability and a race simulation was achieved without major problems. Altogether the new car had some minor glitches with secondary systems, but nothing major. A third PS02 is currently being assembled and all three will be shaken down at Misano Adriatico on Tuesday before shipment to Australia on February 21st. On February 23rd the team will stop off in Kuala Lumpur for the official launch of its new car.

Toyota - Preparing for final tests:

The Toyota Formual One team started a final three day test at Paul Ricard yesterday [Friday] with Mika Salo driving while Allan McNish will take over for Saturday and Sunday. The team now has three TF102s all ready in preparation for the Australian Grand Prix and these will probably be given a final shakedown at the French track next week although a firm date has not yet been fixed.
