Jaguar's Eddie Irvine was fourth, with Ralf Schumacher fifth and the Renault's of Jenson Button and Jarno Trulli sixth and seventh. Button was fractionally up on his Italian team-mate, with a best lap of 1 minute 23.186 seconds.
Mike Gascoyne - Renault's Technical Director - noted: "We had a useful day at Silverstone. Jarno and Jenson were both happy with the progress they made during the morning, whereas our tyre work during the afternoon was focused on the forthcoming races this season."
Following on from the two Renault's was 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve. He was joined by BAR-Honda test driver, Patrick Lemarie, who was two seconds off the pace of his team-mate and 16th fastest overall.
Arrows' Enrique Bernoldi and BMW WilliamsF1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya rounded off the top ten. JPM completed 16 laps and set a best time of 1m 24.608s. Eleventh was Felipe Massa, who spent the day continuing preparation work for the Canadian GP.
Massa noted: "The conditions were better this morning than they were yesterday, and though there was a high wind the track was dry. We worked through most of our intended schedule and continued it after lunch, when we also did some suspension set-up development. Overall, apart from the frustrating weather, it's been another reasonably productive day."
Next up was the two Jordan's - Takuma Sato fractionally quicker than Giancarlo Fisichella - and then the two Toyota's, piloted by race drivers Allan McNish and Mika Salo. Patrick Lemarie was 16th and Jaguar's James Courtney and Pedro de la Rosa, were 17th and 18th, the only other runners at the track.
Testing continues tomorrow [Thursday].
