BMW traces engine problems.

BMW has traced the engine problems that blighted its challenge to Ferrari at the Canadian Grand Prix. According to BMW Motorsport director Mario Theissen it was a valve failure for Juan Pablo Montoya's car which put the Colombian out with just thirteen laps to go to the end of the race. Team-mate Ralf Schumacher was more fortunate however, his engine failure, due to a piston, didn't occur until the slow-down lap.

"On Wednesday we dismantled the engines," explained Theissen. "Juan Pablo's engine stopped in the race due to a broken valve. On Ralf's car, a problem with a piston appeared after he had crossed the finish line.

"It actually was not a failure of the piston itself but of the operating conditions."

Montoya's engine failure marks the second time the Colombian has retired this year, both times being due to engine failure. Ralf Schumacher, on the other hand, only failed to finish in the first race of the season in Mebourne when he made a spectacular airborne exit from the race.
