The Brazilian's best time was a 1 minute 31.457 seconds and the only other driver to get close, was his team-mate Michael Schumacher - the German posting a time that was around four tenths slower.
Rubens Barrichello continued to set the pace today [Friday] in the second free practice session for the British Grand Prix.
The Brazilian's best time was a 1 minute 31.457 seconds and the only other driver to get close, was his team-mate Michael Schumacher - the German posting a time that was around four tenths slower.
Despite spinning off this morning in session one, Michael was back on form this afternoon, and both Ferraris set times that will send shock waves down the pit lane. Indeed the red cars were the only ones to post times in the 1 minute 31 second bracket. The next best was Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella, on a 1 minute 33.434 seconds.
Fisichella's team-mate, Takuma Sato also showed well posting the fifth best time of the day, and leaving BMW WilliamsF1 driver, Juan Pablo Montoya, sandwiched between the two distinctive yellow cars. Despite ending the day positively, Eddie Jordan's outfit came close to seeing a repeat of the incident at the European GP, when Fisichella spun at Club and almost hit his team-mate Taku. Luckily contact was avoided and both went on to set times that made the Silverstone based team the 'best of the rest'.
It was a good day too for BAR-Honda's Jacques Villeneuve - he was sixth quickest, way up on his team-mate Olivier Panis who was stuck down in 14th on a 1 minute 35.534 seconds.
Kimi Raikkonen was sixth, the lead West McLaren Mercedes driver, then came the Sauber of Felipe Massa and Brit Jenson Button. Button, although failing to improve on his time set earlier in the day, still outpaced his Renault team-mate Jarno Trulli. Trulli was 16th, nearly two seconds slower.
Nick Heidfeld was tenth for Sauber with Ralf Schumacher eleventh and David Coulthard twelfth. DC made a mistake early on, spinning off at Club but despite continuing and setting a slightly quicker time to that posted this morning, dropped down the order as others made better improvements.
Jaguar duo Pedro de la Rosa and Eddie Irvine were 13th and 15th respectively, back down where we have come to expect 'The Cat' to be, they sandwiched the BAR of Olivier Panis, who again struggled and was the slowest of the Honda powered cars.
The final three places on the timesheets went to Minardi's Mark Webber and Alex Yoong, and Toyota's Allan McNish. Webber set a time just within the 107 per cent, but both Yoong and McNish were not so lucky. Indeed McNish was around half a second off the minimum time and if both he, and Yoong were to repeat this tomorrow they would not race.
Three other drivers are also in danger of not racing - Mika Salo missed most of both sessions due to food poisoning, the Finn did one out lap this morning and then was not seen on track again.
The Arrows cars have also yet to be seen on track, Heinz-Harald Frenzten, Enrique Bernoldi, and the entire Arrows team were forced to watch the sessions from the pitlane. The team has yet to reach an agreement with Cosworth, to use the Ford owned engines, and it is believed that the Leafield based team owes Cosworth a sum thought to be around ?3 million.
Practice tomorrow starts at 9 am [BST] with qualifying beginning at 1 pm [BST]
