The guessing game surrounding the identity of Arrows' second driver for the Belgian Grand Prix goes on - despite the beleaguered team naming former pilot Heinz-Harald Frentzen as partner to Enrique Bernoldi.

Interestingly, the two drivers' names were reversed on the official entry list - with Frentzen taking on the number 21 car - enabling the German, in assuming number two driver status in the team, to be replaced more than once before the end of the year. Frentzen has already agreed a move to Sauber for 2003, and his manager insists he will not be driving for Arrows at Spa-Francorchamps.

"It's not happening - we will not be in Belgium this weekend," Monte Field told Reuters news agency, "We've left the team and there will be nothing to bring us to Belgium."

Teams are allowed to name a replacement driver up to the beginning of the qualifying session on Saturday, giving Arrows time to negotiate with a replacement and still get track time courtesy of Bernoldi, who was present in the Spa paddock yesterday [Thursday].

The team presented both its cars for scrutineering as required, but its participation in the Belgian event apparently remains dependent on the confirmation of a new US investor, scheduled for today [Friday].

Interestingly, former BAR boss Craig Pollock has denied that he it is his US-backed consortium that has 'won' the deal with Arrows principal Tom Walkinshaw. Instead, the BBC names American mining magnate Cal Smith as the new financier of the team.
