The first hard rock excavation of Bahrain Racing Circuit was carried out Sunday at the 300ha site in Sakhir in the south of the Kingdom, witnessed by senior officials from Bahrain Racing Circuit Committee (BRCC), the Bahrain Motor Federation (BMF) and Ministry of Works.
Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, President of the General Organization for Youth & Sports and BMF President Shaikh Tariq bin Mohammed Al Khalifa led the delegation of officials who witnessed two separate blasts between noon and one o'clock local time Sunday.
The first blast cleared 500 cubic metres of rock in preparation for a spectacular canyon feature on the Grand Prix circuit. The second, larger blast cleared 1000 cubic metres of rock for the main vehicle access tunnel that will link the car parks to the pits and paddock area. The tunnel will be situated under the start and finish straight.
Bahrain's Ministry of Interior supervised this specialist work, which was carried out by Bramco on behalf of Cybarco Bahrain - WCT, the joint venture main contractors for the construction Bahrain Circuit. Cybarco Bahrain is a prominent local company and WCT Engineering Berhad of Malaysia constructed the Sepang Formula One Circuit in Kuala Lumpur.
Sunday saw the first in a series of excavations which will eventually clear 500,000 cubic metres of rock for processing and re-use over the next eight months. Bahrain Racing Circuit is scheduled for completion by March 2004 after a 16 month construction period.
The occasion marked another important milestone in the project; following the official announcement of the Bahrain F1 / Middle East GP on October 8th 2002 by HH the Crown Prince Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York.
