Coulthard heads Michelin tyre test.

David Coulthard came out on top of the three drivers who stayed on in Spain to conduct a wet weather tyre test for Michelin after the two group tests in Barcelona and Valencia were completed.

The Scot headed Marc Gene and Jarno Trulli by almost a second as Michelin's three lading equipes pounded around the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia. Each of the three drivers had already spent some part of the week at the southern Spanish venue, but Coulthard maintained McLaren's run at the top of the times with a best lap of 1min 27.430secs.

Gene was next up in the sole Williams, comfortably ahead of Trulli, who did not appear in the hybrid development Renault containing several parts destined for next year's machine, as the Enstone team reverted to the normal spec R202 to provide a known base for the tyre test. The Italian's 68 laps covered was the least of the three drivers, with Gene's 92 outstripping both his rivals.

Lap times were about 14secs from the pace being set in the dry during the week.
