Button takes Imola pole.
Jenson Button secured his first career F1 pole in a thrilling qualifying session at Imola, out-pointing local hero Michael Schumacher to give BAR its first top spot.
The Briton ran fifth from the end in the second qualifying session, and had to watch as Schumacher, David Coulthard and both Williams drivers before he could breathe easy, but errors from the first pair, and what appears to be a conservative strategy from the BMW-powered men guaranteed history.

Ralf Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, Takuma Sato, Mark Webber, Jarno Trulli and Cristiano da Matta completed top ten, with particularly good efforts coming from the Renault drivers and Jaguar man, all of whom had languished down the order in pre-qualifying, but pulled a good lap out of the bag when it counted.
Kimi Raikkonen, however, will wonder what he has to do to turn his luck around, as another engine problem prevented him from completing a flying lap. The Finn will be joined on the back row by Giancarlo Fisichella, the Sauber driver unable to capitalise on a flying first session lap when his car refused to work properly.
