His Serene Highness Prince Rainier of Monte Carlo has been awarded the first ever FIA Gold Medal for Motor Sport, as the governing body recognised his involvement in staging the most famous grand prix and rally of all.

Monaco has played a significant part in motorsport history and, with both the annual Formula One event and Monty Carlo Rallye being based there, has hosted more FIA world championship events than any other country.
