Superman Coulthard flies to first RBR podium.

His car is emblazoned with decals for the forthcoming Superman movie and David Coulthard certainly lived up to his reputation as a Superhero by delivering Red Bull a surprise maiden podium finish at the Monaco Grand Prix.

In a race of ups and downs for Coulthard, the Scot appeared to have his chances of a points result severely hampered when he had to follow Rubens Barrichello's very heavy Honda for the first half of the race.

Pitting later than Giancarlo Fisichella and Nico Rosberg who had been directly in front, Red Bull switched Coulthard onto a one-stop strategy, a move that paid dividends when a number of cars in front of him fell out of the running.

Indeed, Kimi Raikkonen, Mark Webber, Jarno Trulli and Rubens Barrichello all held a podium spot at some point before hitting mechanical problems or receiving a drive-thru penalty in the case of Barrichello, while team mate Christian Klien had also been as high as fifth before he retired with gearbox problems.

Nonetheless, Coulthard was the main in third place at the crucial moment, causing the Red Bull team to launch into frantic celebrations for their first ever podium in a season that has seen them struggle thus far.

Indeed, Coulthard, who received his trophy draped appropriately in a cape, was delighted with his result, particularly as Monaco is a place close to his heart.

"It's so great, fantastic," Coulthard beamed. "It's been a couple of years since I was on the podium, so it's especially great to finish on it here in Monaco. It's the first podium for Red Bull Racing too and a great reward for all the team's hard work.

"Monaco's always a tough race. Once you get into it, you think you've done about fifty laps, but then you see that you've only done about twelve. It's such a hard, physical race and takes a lot out of you."
