Ricciardo qualified seventh for Red Bull on Saturday after a tricky session that saw him fail to match the pace of teammate Max Verstappen in second, prompting the team to consider taking a grid penalty in order to gain another fresh power unit element.
The FIA stewards confirmed ahead of the race that Ricciardo's car had been fitted with a new internal combustion engine (ICE), turbocharger and MGU-H after qualifying, totalling a 20-place grid drop for the Australian.
Toro Rosso's Brendon Hartley will take the same penalty after an issue emerged on his car in qualifying, leaving him P15 overall, while teammate Pierre Gasly received a five-place grid drop after taking a new turbocharger. As the Frenchman failed to qualify, he will start last regardless.
The penalties mean that Ricciardo will start P16 for Red Bull ahead of Hartley in 17th, with the provisional grid's final three positions remaining unchanged as Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne take 18th and 19th for McLaren ahead of Gasly at the back.
