Perez sure gap to F1’s big three is smaller in 2018

Force India’s Sergio Perez believes Formula 1’s midfield pack will be much closer to Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull in terms of performance during the 2018 season.

Pre-season testing suggested F1’s midfield battle is set to be even tighter this year, with the likes of Renault, McLaren, Haas and Toro Rosso all showing positive signs of improvements over the winter.

Perez says he is anticipating a close fight for midfield supremacy throughout 2018 ahead of this weekend’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

“During testing we saw that all the midfield teams are quite close together in terms of performance. I also think the gap to the front of the grid is smaller,” the Mexican said.

Force India tested a simpler version of its 2018 challenger - the VJM11 - at Barcelona and appeared to be lagging behind some of its direct rivals.

However, the Silverstone-based squad is set to be boosted by a big upgrade package in Melbourne, as it looks to consolidate its fourth place in the constructors’ championship.

“You always arrive in Melbourne full of hope,” Perez added. “There are lots of unanswered questions and it’s when you really start to understand your competitiveness.

“At the same time, it’s not a typical race because it’s usually quite unpredictable. Often, just finishing the race is the key to getting a good result.”
