Ferrari: No ‘magic solution’ for Canada

Ferrari Formula 1 chief Mattia Binotto says there is no “magic solution” to turn the team’s form around in time for next weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, but believes it will be in “better shape” to fight at the front with Mercedes.

Ferrari is yet to win a race so far this season despite impressing throughout pre-season testing, and appeared to be the third-fastest team in Monaco last weekend as it also trailed Red Bull.

With its championship hopes fading fast, Ferrari is in need of a quick change in fortunes as Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc bid to end Mercedes’ streak of victories.

Speaking on Sunday in Monaco, Binotto said there was no quick fix to Ferrari’s current current struggles, but refused to treat the upcoming race in Canada as being make or break to its season.

“I don't think that Canada is the last race of the season,” Binotto said.

“I think we need to certainly improve ourselves race by race. We've got some programmes which have been launched back at Maranello to eventually address the issues we've seen in the last couple of races.

“I don't think that there will be any magic solution in Canada. The car is the one we've got here.

“But certainly it's a different track, different configuration, different compounds, different setup. The only thing we can do is to prepare ourselves to the best with the simulator work, with the setup preparation.

“As I said, it's not the last race.”

The power-sensitive nature of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal is expected to play to Ferrari’s strengths, giving Binotto hope that the team will be a step closer to Mercedes.

“I think it's very difficult to judge. I think we will be in a better shape compared to Barcelona, but I think they've still got the best car and the strongest car at the moment,” he said.

“So I think they are still the ones that should be ahead. But maybe the gap will be closer.

“If there's any opportunity, we will be ready to take it.”
