Gasly: Tough for Toro Rosso to catch Renault on current form
Pierre Gasly believes it will be tough for Toro Rosso to catch Renault in the constructors’ championship before the end of the season given the French team’s current form and consistency.
Toro Rosso is chasing its best-ever finish in the F1 teams’ standings, sitting sixth with three races to go, nine points behind Renault in P5.
The team finished ninth in the championship last year, and is looking to beat its best finish of P6 from 2008. It is also three points shy of its highest points total for a season, set in 2015.

Gasly has been in fine form since returning to Toro Rosso after being dropped by Red Bull mid-season, scoring points in four of his six appearances to date.
“The goal is to keep going like it has been going since I came back to Toro Rosso in Spa. I’m really happy with the way we work with the team, with the new engineers and the new car, and I’m happy with the way we perform every weekend,” Gasly said in Mexico.
“We’re in a tight battle in the championship. It’s important to take every single point we can and the plan is to keep on going.”
Asked about Toro Rosso’s chances of catching Renault in the constructors’ championship, Gasly said he thought it would be “tough” but still possible with a consistent run of races.
“They seem to be a bit more consistent than we are, but as long as it’s possible we need to keep on pushing,” Gasly said.
“I know the gap looks small, but for us is quite big. If we can get one or two points on them every weekend, I think it’s possible to get them at the end of the year.”
