Albon on Red Bull F1 future: ‘I have three races to show what I’ve got'
Alex Albon says he is fully focused on putting in a strong performance at each of the remaining three races of the 2020 Formula 1 season to ensure he secures his Red Bull seat for 2021.
Red Bull is yet to determine who will partner Max Verstappen next year as it continues to weigh up its driver line-up options. Free agents Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg have both been linked, but the team’s intention is to retain Albon and it is willing to give the under-pressure Thai racer until the end of the campaign to prove he deserves to stay.
Albon took confidence from one of his strongest weekends of the season at the Turkish Grand Prix and insisted he is thinking about nothing else other than Plan A - to keep his seat at Red Bull for next year.
“It was a good weekend from my side,” Albon said. “It was a step forward in step of pace.
“We did a few things to the car which felt better and at the end of the day, there’s still three races to show what I got and that’s what I want. I want to have a good three races ahead of me.
“The focus is on these three races. There’s not really any other thought to it. Most people have a Plan B but my plan is Plan A and that’s staying in this team. I’m focused on that, that’s my goal and yeah, as I said, just focus on the last three races.”
Seventh place in Turkey ended a run of three races without a point for Albon, who believes he is making progress with the balance and handling issues that have hampered his sophomore season at Red Bull.
“I would say it’s just about confidence in the car, driving the car and being on the limit the whole time and being consistent with it,” he explained.
“Especially at the start of the year we had a difficult rear end and that is getting better. In terms of my feeling with the car, that is also improving. If I can just feel better in that sense, that’s really the main thing.”
