Mercedes will not announce who will get the seat alongside Lewis Hamilton in 2022 until both Valtteri Bottas and George Russell have secured their Formula 1 futures.

Speculation surrounding the identity of Hamilton’s teammate for next year has dominated the F1 headlines ever since the seven-time world champion agreed to a new two-year deal ahead of the season.

Having weighed up whether to retain Bottas or promote its protege and current Williams driver George Russell, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff revealed at the Belgian Grand Prix that he had finally made a decision.

There is a growing consensus within the F1 paddock that Russell has got the nod for the sole-remaining Mercedes works drive, however, a formal announcement has not yet come.

“There are stakeholders that are involved that we need to respect,” Wolff said when explaining why Mercedes has not yet confirmed who will partner Hamilton next season.

“And as long as contracts are not signed, it makes no sense to announce.”

Asked if Mercedes wants Bottas and Russell to have their futures sorted before an announcement is made, Wolff replied: “Yes.

“And it’s not only our call but there are other parties involved and you have to always proceed with respect and with diligence.”

Bottas has been linked with a move to either Alfa Romeo or Williams for next season.

RaceFans reported on Tuesday evening that Bottas is set to join Alfa Romeo, with ex-Red Bull racer Alex Albon expected to seal a return to the F1 grid by taking the Williams seat vacated by Russell.

It is believed that a series of announcements, including Kimi Raikkonen’s retirement from F1, could be made at the upcoming Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
